I think things like 'DX' distinguish it from the standard non-TV robot, but I'm not sure of the best naming to use here for the product.

I'm also not sure if there's some unemulated 3rd mode this game has shown in the box on the bottom left - the only modes I could play with the units I had are these 2 modes, those might rely on extra robots for communicaiton? not quite sure what it's trying to say

at least there's no cart slot on this one, so any extra robots will just be enabled by the signals

for Bakutou Sengen Daigunder DX there was a cart slot, but both ROM carts were dumped (the rest are again signals)

there's apparently a Korean version of Daigunder DX which is likely a different internal ROM (don't know if tat one took different carts also) but I doubt we'll find that.

found a test mode with an 'IR' list, so I guess it's IR related and I need to find how that gets read

The 'assume 0 is spriteram' thing might seem a little strange, but DMA on other sunplus units can make similar assumptions, where the programmers usually set an address because they could, but in reality didn't need. There's nothing using GPL16250 that seems to be worse with that assumption, and as most GPL16250 games have stability issues already it's just extra evidence to help figure things out at this point.
