This has happened across multiple files now, includes new projects started entirely from scratch.
I make a cube, assign it a softvolume modifier, set some lamps to use it as a softvolume. Blender seems to think that there are multiple users of that datablock (maybe because of the lamps?)
Save the file, close Blender, open Blender, reopen the file. I get an error about a lost object in the scene, and my softvolume cube is gone.

I'm definitely suffering from this issue as well. A major soft volume to contain lighting that i just built vanished on me between opening and closing.
In my brief testing it seems like it's Potentially two or more lamps causing it to vanish? As one of my soft volumes with only one lamp tied to it has been saved across multiple quit/loads so far... BUT it is ALSO a soft volume mesh i've had to recreate and I know I've made it before earlier in the build process.
LINK HERE. You can find my pod12 blend with a temp softvolume named "IAmATestSoftVolume" setup. It has two RT lights calling to it as their soft volume. There is a second soft volume with a lamp attached to it next to the computer monitor on the desk- it has only one lamp attached to it.
