There is an obscure feature that if you interact with the keyhole in certain ways right before the hidden gun goes off, the game considers you to be near enough to the keyhole that you always get shot. (See KEY-HOLE-F and FIRE-SHOT.) But this happens even if you're still sitting in the wooden chair, where you're usually safe:
>TIME
It's now 9:02 p.m.
>EXAMINE KEYHOLE
You'd do a much better job if you stood up, but let's see...
It's an impressive keyhole, wrapped in a fine brass escutcheon.
You hear the door bell ring.
Linder looks toward the window and says, "I don't think Phong has answered the
door bell yet." He reaches toward the butler's button and at the same instant
shouts "Stiles!" You turn around and dimly see a figure outside. Suddenly there
is a flash of light and an explosion, and everything goes black. What a lousy
way to step off, poking around like a two-bit shamus!
[Hit any key to exit.]
That seems a bit wrong to me.
