Butler Windows Service not Writing Log

Hi @mountaindude

Compliments of the season!

We are trying to fully implement the Butler service, though when trying to run as a windows service, it does not write a log and it does not write to InfluxDB.

The service does start when I setup as described in this link: https://ptarmiganlabs.com/running-butler-tools-as-windows-services/
but no activity on Influx or on Grafana where I'm monitoring the services.

When I run butler from command line though it does run and writes to Influx, but does not write a log. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Sounds like a permissions problem.

I've seen that in cases where the initial testing and setting up of Butler and Butler SOS was done using someone's personal Windows account, then when the tools are deployed as Windows services (using some other account) there are issues.

I would do things like these:

• Delete the log folder entirely. It will be recreated when Butler starts (assuming log-to-disk is enabled).
• Make sure the account used to run the Windows service has full permissions to the folder (and sub-folders!) where Butler resides.
• Open a command shell using the account used for the Windows service, then run Butler interactively in that shell. If that works the Windows service should work too.
