.SH NAME
italic-man \(en Support for italic display in manual pages
.SH SYNOPSIS
\fB/usr/share/italic-man/iroff\fP -mandoc ...
.br
\fBGROFF_BIN_PATH=/usr/share/italic-man\fP nroff ...
.br
\fBgrotty\fP ...
.SH DESCRIPTION
The \fIitalic-man\fP wrapper scripts enable italic display in manual pages
(where italic is specified in the page) in terminals supporting italic mode.
.SH USAGE
The scripts are invoked implicitly within the workflow of \fIman\fP.
They detect the terminal type using a device attributes request.
Italic support is enabled for mintty (from version 2.0.3),
KDE-konsole, rxvt-unicode (from version 3.8), xterm (from version 305).
.SH SETUP
There are a few ways to activate the \fIitalic-man\fP wrapper scripts
\fIgrotty\fP and \fIiroff\fP.
.SS Local/personal setup
Let the environment variable \fBGROFF_BIN_PATH\fP point to a directory
where the scripts \fIgrotty\fP and \fIiroff\fP are installed, e.g.:
.br
Configure your environment:
.br
export GROFF_BIN_PATH=/usr/share/italic-man
.SS Global configuration
Install the scripts in a location contained in the global PATH or use them in
their installation directory \fI/usr/share/italic-man\fP.
.br
Configure \fI/etc/man_db.conf\fP to use the \fIiroff\fP script:
.br
DEFINE nroff iroff -mandoc
.br
or
.br
DEFINE nroff /usr/share/italic-man/iroff -mandoc
.SS Global substitution (Cygwin)
Install the \fIgrotty\fP script into /usr/bin, alongside grotty.exe.
.br
WARNING: It's a bit tricky to do this without deleting grotty.exe
(due to cygwin's exe magic); see the \fIpostinstall\fP script of the package.
.br
Also note that this tricky installation is spoiled when the \fIgroff\fP
package gets updated.
.SS Global substitution (Linux/Unix)
Rename /usr/bin/grotty to /usr/bin/grotty.exe.
.br
Install the \fIgrotty\fP script into /usr/bin, alongside grotty.exe.
.br
Note that this installation is spoiled when the \fIgroff\fP package
gets updated.
.SS Terminal type reporting script
The \fIgrotty\fP script can also be installed under a name containing
"terminal" which then reports the detected terminal type only.
.SH ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
.TP
\fBITALIC_MAN\fP
Values 0 or 1, respectively, disable or enable italic support in man
pages independently of the actual terminal. Terminal detection is skipped.
.TP
\fBITALIC_TERMINALS\fP
A colon-separated list of terminal types; if the terminal type detected
is among them, italic support is enabled (not distinguishing versions).
.TP
\fBGROFF_BIN_PATH\fP
Directory where the \fIgrotty\fP script of the italic-man package is
located, typically \fIGROFF_BIN_PATH=/usr/share/italic-man\fP.
Optional user setting to enable italic-man if it is not configured globally.
.SH LIMITATIONS
If xterm uses bitmap fonts and no properly matching italic bitmap font
is configured, the visual result may be unsatisfying.
With rxvt-unicode, selection of italic fonts was sometimes observed to stall.
