Basemap has the ability to draw continents (and even countries) without having the polygon lines go all over the place when they cross the map border. How does Basemap do this? How can we adapt it for survey footprints and other polygon shapes?

Might also be solved by updating to cartopy (issue #13) as mentioned here and shown in this example.
