Moving away from the shell exports, we should default to use the system variables available to linux.

Use case

  • Most systems only require one installation.
  • If systems require different installations, they would typically use a shell profile.
  • Multi-user accounts are rare unless the system is a server, again these cases can be overridden by the shell profile.
  • This should be configurable, but it should default to a system-wide installation.
