Threads don't show preview in timeline and an empty thread panel

Steps to reproduce

Currently the last two threads in https://matrix.to/#/#compound:matrix.org don't work for me.

Outcome

What did you expect?

Threads to show a preview in the timeline and the messages in the thread in the threads panel.

What happened instead?

They render a blank preview in the timeline:

And the threads panel stays blank, too, when I click one of them:

Once @gsouquet posted a message into one of the threads, it started working as expected:

Similar issue but I do see a preview. Still the thread panel is empty. Going to the thread list in the thread panel shows the thread but clicking on it still results in an empty panel. Please find a rageshake above.

I just got this too: the thread was from some time ago and the messages in the thread were presumably not loaded. Once I found the thread root in the main timeline, it worked fine, which would suggest this could be a problem where it doesn't work if element doesn't have the messages in the thread.

Looks like this happens when we fail to fetch the thread root which we rely on to find the latest event in a thread and number of responses:
