There is a need to track the way "depth" was calculated in exchange files. The "depth" in this context means where the sea floor is, not the position of the package. It has been calculated in several ways (that I can remember):
Bottom ping time with speed of 1500m/s (historically this was "uncorrected" depth)
Taking the centerbeam value from the multibeam
calculated package depth + the reading from the altimeter
Current proposal is to have some attribute which records this information.
Work right now is to look for prior art for recording information like this: ACDD, CF, OceanSites, Argo.
