"make" the texture tools will error on CompressKernel.gen.c.o

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.configure
2.make
3. during making of the files in nvtt.dir it hangs on CompressKernel.gen.c.o

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected the nvtt to be built

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.0.8 on Linux Mint 17.1

Please provide any additional information below.
i7 processor and a GTX980

I'm guessing newest CUDA releases are not compatible with that code anymore. 
I'd recommend downgrading, upgrading the code, or disabling CUDA compilation.
