Would anyone like to add to or change any items on the agenda?
OK, let's get started with the WordPress Community news.
WordPress Community
🟢 WordPress 6.4 Performance
WordPress 6.4 delivers performance upgrades with a focus on improving server response times by approximately 4% and refining Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) metrics, enhancing the user experience. Notable server and client-side improvements include better object caching, new option functions, template loading enhancements, image optimization, and script loading refinements.
The release also marks progress in benchmarking methodologies, adopting automated, reproducible testing processes for more consistent performance evaluations. This structured approach is used to compare current and previous WordPress versions, paving the way for data-driven enhancements in future releases.
🟢 WordPress 6.4 PHP Compatibility
WordPress 6.4 supports PHP 7.0 and above, with full compatibility up to PHP 7.4. However, versions 7.0 to 7.4 are not maintained for security, thus not recommended for production environments.
PHP 8.0 to 8.2 are supported with some exceptions, like the lack of named parameter support and some specific function behaviors that might cause errors.
PHP 8.3 is beta compatible, indicating readiness for the upcoming version but not recommended for production.
The Hosting Team recommends PHP 8.1.x or 8.2.x, MySQL 8.0.x, and MariaDB 10.11.x for WordPress 6.4, primarily for new installations.
🟢 WordPress 6.5.x
The WordPress 6.5 bug scrub schedule is established to facilitate the progress toward the upcoming release. The schedule includes Alpha Bug Scrubs focusing on features, enhancements, and then bugs with several sessions already set for November and December 2023.
Beta Bug Scrubs will target remaining bugs and reported regressions, with dates to be determined as the cycle progresses. Release Candidate Bug Scrubs will address issues from the previous RC, also with dates pending.
The full release schedule will be updated during the planning process, and contributions from the community are encouraged throughout these stages.
🟢 State of the Word 2023
The State of the Word 2023 is slated for December 11, 2023, in Madrid, Spain, marking the first time this annual WordPress event will take place outside North America.
The event, featuring WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg, will celebrate the achievements of WordPress and provide insights into its future.
It will be live-streamed globally, with a limited in-person audience due to venue capacity. Attendees can participate in a Q&A session with Matt, and unanswered questions will be addressed in a follow-up post-event publication.
NOTE: @javiercasares will be there, so if any of you are going, please, look for him. :)
Ok, let's move on to Hosting Team time.
Hosting Team Time!
🟢 WordPress Hosting Team event
You have known for some time that we are thinking of holding an event that would include the Hosting, Performance, Tide, Security, and Sustainability teams, all from a “sysadmin” perspective.
This idea could be suggested as an event led by the Hosting team and could be held (annually?) the day before WordCamp Europe (Wednesday, before Contributor Day -Thursday-).
For 2024, and after speaking with the WCEU organization, it is not possible to use the same venue, but we have some options in Turin. An event for about 50–80 people is conceived.
The idea is that it should be an event for professionals in the sector (it cannot be limited to just anyone, but attendance could be prioritized for those working in hosting companies or in the sector).
The goal (unlike Contributor Day) is to put on the table aids, technologies, and any elements that the WordPress Community can offer to hosting providers.
Launching some topics that could be interesting:
In the following days we will have the first meeting, so we can prepare the organizing team and do the official request for the event. Thereafter, we will publish a post about the event and do the official callings for the teams involved.
🟢 Hosting Team Reps for 2024
The Call for Nominees is closed.
As in previous occasions, the process will have 3 phases:
Phase 1 is closed. From today until next Wednesday, we will contact all the nominees and publish the post and start the election.
Thank you for all the nominations you submitted!
