When one of the students chose their font, and then went to choose a new color in preferences, it reset his font was reset when he chose a new color.

Was it a particular color(foreground, background, comments, etc...)? I'm trying to recreate this and having trouble. I am changing the font then changing the foreground color and the font stays.
