Keep variable fonts variable #17
Comments
Hi, I just added the feature in v1.10. You can now achieve it by checking "Keep the font variable". |
I tested it in OneNote and got the expected result---appearances of bold are identical for the original font and the variable frozen one, and it's not good for the non-variable one. It also works in Notepad++. There seems to be some other issues. (1) I also tested it in Word. The bold non-variable frozen font is not as good as the original, as expected. But the variable frozen font comes out very thin (low weight), and turning it bold doesn't make much of a difference. (2) The original font has 32 font faces with distinct names in Windows font setting, but the variable frozen one only has 8 and all of them are named "Regular". I suspect that for many applications it should not matter since the font is variable, but it would be good to keep the named weights. |
@niwazukihon Sounds like those could take a while to inspect further. I will get back to those after I'm done with other tasks at hand. |
I have similar issues with freezing Maple Mono font. Feature tweaks worked, but the font came out thin, with only 1 weight and no other variants (e.g. Thin, Medium,...). |
I only want to turn on an OpenType feature of a variable font (JetBrainsMono). Is it possible to only change that and keep the font variable? Thank you.
